[Willow Grove, Pa.] Derr Flooring Co. presented its’ annual scholastic excellence award on Aug. 8 for the 17th consecutive year.
The scholarship committee chose two people from a group of twelve applicants. The company said that the scholarship program was the original brainchild of Chester Derr, Jr. and his late sister Gayle Holden.
To date, the Derr family said that it has provided financial support for students in the amount of $133,000. Scholarships are offered to the children and grandchildren of Derr employees who are seeking to further their education beyond the high school level.
The recipients chosen this year were Alyssa Mahaffey who is a public relations major at Syracuse University and Kevin Touchette who is a part time driver for Derr Flooring as well as a finance major at East Stroudsburg University. Applicants must submit the following information; current GPA, official high school or college transcript, a list of extra curricular activities or school events, religious or social activities as well as an essay in answering the question of “If you had the authority to change your school in a positive way, what specific changes would you make?” A luncheon followed the presentation of scholarships.
