[Irving, Texas] As a teaser to the comprehensive Greenbuild Sustainability Report coming out March 2018, Greenbuild announced the Top 5 sustainability stories from the 2017 Boston expo.
1. 90.5 percent waste diversion at Convention Center — best in the history of Greenbuild!
--This rate was 5 percent higher than what was achieved when Greenbuild was in Boston back in 2008.
2. Over 25,000lbs of show donations
--This year, Greenbuild exhibitors along with exhibitors from the co-located ABX show, donated over 25,000 pounds of materials including cement blocks, flooring, carpet, floor tiles and wood. These items were donated to local non-profits including Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, over 1,500 pounds of food donations were also collected by catering partner at the BCEC, Levy, and distributed to Boston Rescue Mission.
3. Legacy Project participants a behind the scenes look at Greenbuild Expo
--As part of the mission to expose the next generation of building operators and middle-skills trade workers to a wide range of “green collar” jobs, students from Madison Park Technical Vocational High School came to Greenbuild for a tour of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, learning first-hand how the LEED certified buildings operate and how programs and practices support major events in going green.
4. Greenbuild 2017 was powered by 100 percent renewable energy
--The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) for all electricity used and carbon offsets for all natural gas. In doing so, all activities that took place at the convention center for Greenbuild were sourced by 100 percent renewable energy, making Greenbuild 2017 our first show to achieve this milestone.
5. 14,500 attendees at Greenbuild pledge to put sustainability first!
--Almost 13,000 attendees pledged to uphold specific sustainable practices while registering for Greenbuild. Additionally, attendees were asked to stop by the Sustainability Hub to "make your pledge" in person and another 1,500 pledged on-site.
Keep an eye out for our comprehensive report of Greenbuild’s greening initiatives, coming next month.
