Going Global

Monday, September 11, 2017

By Emily Morrow Finkell

The world seems to be getting smaller and smaller. While there are many miles between cities and markets — from Paris, France to Hannover, Germany to Las Vegas, Nev. and High Point, N.C. — there are a great many similarities among the shows, the subtle differences come mainly from the flavor and culture of the cities themselves. Make no mistake, the global marketplace today thrives with interesting new trends.

1. Tropical Fronds (see feature image)
Head south for the season with a burst of botanical: Turn over a languorous leaf with a selection of equator-inspired patterns, prints and other pops of design.

2. Luxurious Materials

Luxurious materials and textures are among the biggest trends spotted at Maison et Objet, one of the first shows of the year held in Paris. Tactile softness and a softened pastel color palette makes for a dynamic duo.
The combination of luxurious materials with metallic finishes also made a statement at Maison throughout accessories. While pastels and luxury are quiet and comforting, matte black and shiny golden metallics were wow-factors and glamorous. From High Point, here are some examples of the brass and gold pieces which exemplify this trend in the U.S.A.

3. The Unexpected Chandelier

From tableware to textiles, natural and jungle greens make for an instant update to most every design style. In fact, natural elements that have been refined or digitized are among the top trends globally, as seen with The Bentley Chandelier by Bunny Williams for Currey & Company. Exactly how nature is interpreted varies from designer to designer, but expect to see more and more florals, vines and forest foliage in fabrics and wall coverings, as well as horn and bone looks made from combinations of resins in chalky finishes among accessories. Look also for various green hues and for the mixing and layering of these greens. If applied in an avocado or silvery sage green, the trend can feel mid-century modern or art deco.

4. The Accent of All Accent Pillows

Animals of all kinds were at the shows, starting at IMM and Maison et Objet and traveled on to High Point as well as Las Vegas. Animal prints, marine life, Bengal tigers, butterflies, birds, and regal dogs and cats were popular images used for wall art, pillows and a variety of accessories. The Lovebird Leopard Silk Pillows are as luxe as they sound, and each is handmade in South Africa.
